First, I want to take a moment to say hi to all of my international readers and viewers. There are so many of you! So many, in fact, I’m concerned for the fashion sensibilities of my fellow Americans. My blog has followings in Russia, the UK, and Indonesia. The UK likes my channel. Paris and Australia follow me on Instagram. I’m excited to announce that New York has recently discovered my posts. The Frugal Fashionista may have to go on an international road trip soon.
I avoid the run-of-the-mill-what-I-did-today posts. I’m making an exception this time. I’ve been busy this summer and wanted to give you a tour of what I’m doing.
There are certain things no one warns you about when you sign up for fashion blogging. I started The Frugal Fashionista June 2014. I’ve expanded quickly. Keep in mind, I do have a day job that keeps me fairly busy. I was ill-equipped for the amount of daily social media interaction. Social media + introversion = WTH did I start doing this in the first place. I have to document every outfit, every product review, and every purchase. Some days, I forget to document my outfit-of-the-day, so this happens:
Instagram is my favorite (the_frugal_fashionista). I don’t know why I didn’t join sooner. I try to give my audience something everyday. I even had to document my haircut.
I’m also learning the art of YouTubing. I’m a former radio personality turned university instructor. We don’t have to worry about facial expressions or lighting in radio. We cower in a semi-lit room in front of a microphone in sweats and t-shirts. Someone told me that my face was too animated for television. He was right. The struggle is real.
I shot on location for the first time. I wanted to document my haircut. I don’t know if I was successful. Here’s the funny thing. When you show up with a camera, people avert their eyes from you. Hear no evil. See no evil. Don’t end up in the shot.
I also receive the side glances of judgment whenever I selfie (selfie should be a verb). I always feel the need to explain myself. Nothing to see here. Just a girl creating content for her fashion blog. Carry on.
The lighting in my house is horrible. There are few windows and even fewer decent light bulbs. The hubby wants to create a production studio in the closet for voiceover work. We’re converting one side of the home office into a video area. Here’s the before:
The horrible pink walls were here before we were. I’m considering something more serene:
In the meantime, I can’t handle all of the clutter. I’m working primarily from home this week. The clutter is anxiety producing. We created a temporary space for me in the living room.
Not everyone in our household was pleased.
Here’s the most exciting part of my summer. Besides playing with neutrals and European style, I’m planning a website upgrade for August and a fashion spread for September. I’m upgrading to a more stylish theme for more a fashion webzine look. I love a good makeover. I’m also upgrading to the premium package to allow me to embed of videos and expand my media storage.
But enough about the website. Let’s talk photo shoot. My September is booked.
I’m creating looks for my website to debut throughout the month of September in conjunction with the worldwide fashion weeks. I’ll film the photo shoot for a docuseries on YouTube called My Fashion Life. I will also launch lots of new content.
My friend Alexa, makeup artist and future beauty vlogger, is doing my makeup for the shoot. She’s launching a channel next year. Can somebody say collaboration?
My friend Whitney, master stylist to the stars or just this lone blogger, is doing my hair. She’s the only person I trust with my unruly cowlick. I should mention the salon won a local people’s choice award for best salon. You can see Whitney’s lovely clipper-wielding hands in my upcoming pixie cut video (obviously, I’m still learning about camera angles).
Spoiler alert: Here’s the ideas I’m toying with for the shoot:
As you can see, I am experimenting with style, marketing, video, and social media this summer. Please join me in this journey through this fashion life. Happy shopping!
